As the UK and Ireland's largest renewable electricity generator, SSE Energy Solutions is different as all its renewable electricity is sourced from SSE’s own UK wind and hydro assets. A unique company like SSE Energy Solutions needed a unique approach to their corporate social responsibility strategy, so they teamed up with Rewise Learning to launch the pioneering Climate Connect Education Programme. As part of this programme, Rewise created a digital Climate Connect Learning Hub for students and teachers, as well as rolling out a brand-new school engagement programme, connecting with young people in a fun, practical and informative way.

SSE Energy Solutions Climate Connect Secondary School Workshops

  • Delivered in secondary schools in Scotland, England, and Wales

  • Focussed on environmental themes such as climate change, biodiversity, Net Zero, renewable energy, and how SSE Energy are helping to combat the climate crisis

  • STEM-based education programme, using a specially designed mini wind turbine kit designed and created in-house at Rewise

  • Mini wind turbines imitate the kind of turbines used as part of SSE Energy Solutions' offshore wind farms

  • Secondary pupils team up to build and test their own wind turbines, including the opportunity to experiment with different turbine blades and learn how factors like the direction of a turbine can affect its efficiency

  • Once built, the mini turbines can be used to power a small electronic device such as a smartphone

  • Learners supported by Rewise STEM tutors

  • Exploration of green skills and why these are important for the future

  • Talks on careers and jobs in green industries and the skills and qualifications needed to access them

Value Created

Reducing the use of fossil fuels is key for our planet’s and our own survival. Renewable energy such as wind power is one of the only ways we can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Our Climate Connect programme showcases the role renewables have to play in our future and how important it is for us to invest money and skills into the renewable energy sector. With our mini wind turbine STEM kits, we demonstrate how wind power can be used to generate electricity with the added bonus of improving STEM skills at the same time.
