The University of Wales Trinity Saint David's Reaching Wider team joined together with us, Rewise Learning, to provide school children with innovative education projects. This aimed to promote STEAM subjects and the Welsh Language in order to boost acknowledgement of these subjects in further education.
What is Reaching Wider?
Reaching wider, a UWTSD organisation, aims to widen access into education across the whole student age range by organising learning and aspiration raising activities. Reaching Wider projects aim to promote further education to underrepresented students and communities in South West Wales areas.
Reaching Wider asked Rewise Learning to help with the creation and delivery of some of these activities including I:Explore and I:Ganu. These CSR projects aimed to promote STEM and Language subjects in further education with focus on the promotion of University of Wales Trinity St David.
CSR Project - I:Explore
I:Explore was a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) project which was designed for Year 10 pupils to boost their STEAM awareness. We provided them with the knowledge and materials to build, decorate, and race mini drag raced cars.
With the help of Rewise Learning Tutors, students successfully built their own cars which allowed them to discover opportunities arising from studying STEAM subjects. Information was also given on Further Education and career pathways that relate to STEAM industries.
This CSR project also highlighted UWTSD as a place where the students could progress to after school to earn degrees and further education. Parents and teachers of the participants were made aware that UWTSD would be the perfect place for students to earn further qualifications.
CSR Project - I:Ganu
I:Ganu was a music and singing workshop aiming to promote the development of the Welsh Language as a second language in primary schools. Rewise Learning created and delivered a workshop to engage and support pupils who are learning the Welsh Language. The song creation gave the students an exciting opportunity to showcase their language skills whilst bringing a ‘cool’ factor to learning Welsh. Pupils got involved with the music and lyric writing which enabled them to express their creativity and views on the welsh language and culture, whilst also boosting their confidence in speaking welsh. UWTSD was promoted throughout to give students and teachers a snapshot of further education.
