Learning to Read With Phonics: Why Do Phonics Help You Learn To Read?

What Are Phonics?

Phonics is the use of sounds as a method of learning to read. A word is broken up into it’s individual sounds before putting them together to make the word. For example, the word “cat” can be broken in to “kk” “ah” “tuh” and put back together to sound out the word.

Unlike learning to read through memorising words through sight and shape, phonics is much more engaging and has the ability to enable the learner to work out how to read any word that is put in front of them.

Research into Phonics

English phonics are taught in the UK from a young age, reception year at primary school. This is because research has shown that it is the most effective way of teaching children and even older children how to read. We believe that phonics is engaging and fun which make learning easy.

A study by Marlynne Grant shows that, members of a year two class that were learning reading through phonics were 28 months ahead of their actual ages concerning reading. This shows that learning to read using phonics can achieve very high results.

Children taught to read in this way are able to pick up reading very quickly. They often become confident and excited about their reading and are willing to engaging with reading even when they are not prompted to.

Phonics Reading and Learning Course

Some people believe that teaching reading through phonics is an overly regimented system and denies children from their own imagination. However, phonics allows the learner to think creatively as they can use the same method to unlock different types of vocabulary.

Rewise Learning offer a chance for older children to learn how to read through phonics with LearnThruPhonics. Phonics is introduced to them through fun and interactive games and songs that are suitable for their age group; making learning to read at an older age easy and not embarrassing.
